Senior Savvy BrainstormersTM

Senior Savvy BrainstormersTM board game may be the best new weapon in the fight against dementia in older adults. This game stretches and strengthens the mind to increase mental function.

Age-related dementia affects a great number of people. As the baby-boomer population continues to age, this number is likely to rise significantly.

It is crucial to educate people on the vital importance of keeping the mind fit. Creative thinking plays a key role in a successful aging program.

To meet that need, two Oklahoma women, Dr. Jamie McCracken and Dr. Kathy Goff-certified gerontologists and adult education specialists created this brainstorming game.

Senior Savvy BrainstormersTM provides elder loved ones with an activity other than bingo that can be played in groups of all ages.

Senior Savvy BrainstormersTM is a "brain game" Playing this game stimulates the mind. It is like bingo, in that everyone plays against each other. It also has one central figure that reads the question. But bingo is passive. This game is active. It calls for creative thinking," said Goff.

Goff was mentored by the late Dr. E.P. Torrance and has accomplished extensive research in the field of enhancing creativity in the aged.

When this is game played around tables in nursing homes, adult daycare centers, or community senior centers, it provides laughter and fun.

To play Senior Savvy BrainstormersTM as a group, first divided the room into teams. Draw a card for the first team. Read the card. Turn the 1-minute sand timer over. "Go!" Move that team's marker one space on the board for every answer given during the 60 seconds. All team members join in. The first team home wins.

There are no wrong answers. Peer pressure dictates the group, so lots of interaction can occur as teams try to distract other teams from naming whatever it is, in the allotted time. Examples of things to brainstorm include "things that are sweet", "things that roar" and "things that make you laugh". This game is a good workout for the brain and at the same time great fun.

"Come and play", a phrase that brings kids running, remains compelling to persons of all ages. Good wholesome fun helps keep us young and enthusiastic about life.

Retaining the playfulness and enthusiasm of our youth takes effort, often on the part of the caregiver, but such effort can keep us healthy and alert for many years.

Documented research proves there are definite links between keeping the mind creative, active and alert, and the delay or even prevention of many dementia types including, but not limited to Alzheimer.

"Brainstorming helps us to become flexible in our thinking and enables us to find many options when we are facing a decision," says co-inventor Jamie McCracken.

Research findings indicate that thinking of and coming up with different ideas or possibilities produces mental growth. This type of mental growth keeps the mind healthy and productive, creating significant effects on the quality of life, well-being and wellness.

Other body parts become weak and eventually useless when not properly exercised. Why would the brain be any different?
